Giclee: Market your prints effectively

There are more avenues then ever before to sell your giclee prints.

The art shows

It is undeniable giclee print sell at art shows. Painters and photographers have found that both low cost small prints as well as large canvas giclee can perform very well. The key is to attend the right shows and be in the right location. Many art shows are juried. I have seen sellers ending a weekend with several thousands of dollars in sales. Every now and then shows can be disappointing in sale volume. This is usually due to having a booth in a low traffic are and of course, bad weather. Rainy, windy, cold conditions are not conducive to open air art show attendance.

Marketing online

Building and marketing a site online is always a good idea. Have your web site address listed in your business cards. People can see your portfolio in the comfort of their home. Make sure the site is professionally designed. There is nothing worse than a poorly designed one.

Online galleries are another venue to show you work. Many of them will reserve a space for each artist to display the art. Some online galleries charge a fee up front. Usually the galleries that are free to begin, will make the money with hefty commissions.

The traditional galleries

Never discount local galleries; they make take high commission fees but brick and mortar venues are very effective. Expect a tough selection process. You will be in competition with many other artists all wanting to be featured in a limited amount of space. If you contact a gallery owner, ask first if they accept giclee prints. Second, you will need to have a body of work. No quality gallery will ever consider artists without at least a dozen pieces. Why? Because they know what sells and they need to offer art from committed, credible visual artists. Would you buy art for hundreds or thousands if you knew the piece was just a lucky accident? I wouldn't..
